| Jeanie Wyatt: It's high time for saving to grow trendy
Americans are notorious for their consumption. In the past year, I have gone on record with the opinion that the country's negative savings rate (dis-savings) would reverse. Not only that it would reverse, but that the middle class and particularly younger generations would start saving with a vengeance. Sounds impossible, I know. But, if my theory is correct, it should please economists, most of whom have fretted for years that most people are not socking enough away. In fact, we are all living beyond our means in their eyes. Generally, access to easy credit enabled millions to get big mortgages and multiple credit cards. All that gets in the way of saving. Why would saving suddenly become more popular? The obvious reason is that there are 76 million baby boomers who will reach retirement age in the next two decades.
Good planning means good shows
Getting the most from a sports or boat show starts with some basics, according to 2006 Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli, who as a pro angler for Toyota Truck usually is booked solid for seminars and appearances at shows all winter. Plan ahead and schedule plenty of time for your visit. Mom and Dad may want to check out the latest cabin cruiser, but the youngsters might want to spend their time at the trout pond. So check your newspaper for show hours and any special events. An early arrival means you'll get a close-in parking space, and your feet will thank you later. If you've got toddlers, consider a baby-sitter. If not, don't forget your stroller. It's hard to try out the latest fishing rod while you're carrying a sleepy youngster.
Residents leap from fire, drop baby from second-story
Residents of a second-story apartment jumped out of a window and dropped an 8-month-old baby girl to safety as a blaze raged in their Sunnyvale home early this morning, officials said. The family -- two women, a man and an infant -- were forced to scramble to safety after the two-alarm fire broke out in their apartment just west of Highway 101 near Fair Oaks Avenue around 4:10 a.m., Sunnyvale city spokesman John Pilger said. The first woman to jump out of the second-story window injured herself. The commotion from people yelling for help woke Desiderio Solice, who lives downstairs and a few apartments away from the inferno. Solice, 35, ran outside and saw people trying to jump from the window. By instinct, he said, he ran to the parking lot behind the building and jumped into his large Chevy van.
Anna Nicoles Mum Fears For Baby Dannielynn
ANNA NICOLE SMITH's mother VIRGIE ARTHUR is desperately seeking temporary custody of her late daughter's baby because she fears the tot could be next in the family tragedy. The former police officer arrived in the Bahamas with family members on Friday (09FEB07) and met with local police officials and social service workers in a bid to gather information which she hoped would speed up the process as she fights to become five-month-old DANNIELYNN's guardian. In a TV interview filmed just before Arthur made the trip to the Bahamas, the worried grandmother confessed she feared Dannielynn will be the next family death after her daughter and grandson DANIEL, who died from an overdose last September (06). Arthur said, "I'm worried that she's not gonna live either. My daughter is dead and my grandson is dead and I'm scared to death that something is gonna happen to her.
