Sunday: Walk to emphasize winter wellness
An East Stroudsburg fitness center and a Stroudsburg fast-food restaurant have joined forces to promote a healthy lifestyle and at the same time raise money for a good cause.
Donna Zlocki, owner of the all-new McDonald's on Lower Main Street, and Julie Boorse, co-owner of Pocono Wellness & Sports Center, invite families to take part in a winter wellness walk Sunday that will benefit Pocono Health Foundation, an affiliate of Pocono Medical Center.
"We want to get families in the community to walk in the winter," Boorse said. "Everybody sits at home in the winter. We want to let them know it's OK to be outside in winter."

For sale: zoo's baby bounty
Most people see Natureland as a zoo but as the breeding season ends, the animal park becomes a pet shop. About 200 budgerigars, rats, mice, chinchillas, rabbits and cockatiels born at the park recently are for sale. Park keeper Kate Smithers said the sale was a yearly event that attracted a range of shoppers, from families to elderly people looking for some company. Rats had proved the most popular pet this year - only one was left Thursday afternoon from the 20 born at the park - but the cockatiels were one of the more sociable pets available, she said. The flock of young cockatiels had been hand-reared and shared a bedroom with Natureland's capuchin monkey, Ricky, and a wood pigeon that had been brought into the park to recover after getting drunk on fermented fruit.
New trail opens at San Elijo Lagoon
ENCINITAS ---- A new trail opened this week so that the disabled can use a popular location to watch birds and commune with nature.
View A VideoThe trail is part of a miles-long network in the 1,000-acre San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve between Encinitas and Solana Beach. It includes a raised boardwalk that is 500 feet long and that crosses a willow-filled area that often is flooded. The newest section of the network is part of a quarter-mile loop that begins and ends at the nature center parking lot on Manchester Avenue. The entire loop is flat and wide enough to comply with federal accessibility requirements for the handicapped. .
